Searching for Sugar Man | Film by Malik Bendjelloul (writer, producer and director)
Rodriguez was expected to become one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Plucked out of a Detroit bar by two producers who recognised his immense talent, he recorded two albums — Cold Fact and Coming From Reality — which were expected to bring him enormous success. But they didn’t.
The albums flopped in the US and Rodriguez disappeared into obscurity. But then, unknown to Rodriguez, a bootleg copy of his album made its way to South Africa. His songs became incredibly popular as anthems for the anti-apartheid movement, but nobody really knew who he was. His music was popular for 20 years without him knowing a thing, until two South African fans decided to try and track him down in the 1990s. What happens next? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.
